Tattoos, Piercings and Grooming Standards On Board
Appearance policies vary widely. What is normally accepted, what is not, and how to ask without losing the job.
The honest position
Attitudes have relaxed considerably, but yachting remains a conservative, guest-facing industry. Visible ink on hands, neck and face still closes doors on some boats.
Typical policy
Tattoos covered by uniform are rarely an issue. Forearm tattoos are commonly accepted on deck, less so in interior service roles on traditional boats.
Piercings
One discreet pair of earrings is usually fine for interior crew. Facial piercings are generally removed during guest trips.
How to ask
Raise it plainly at interview: "I have a tattoo on my forearm — is that within the boat's uniform policy?" Direct questions read as professional, not awkward.
Grooming standards
Hair tied back, clean nails, discreet fragrance, uniform pressed. Standards apply to deck and interior alike.
The rule underneath
Nothing should draw a guest's attention away from the service. Every appearance policy in yachting is a version of that one sentence.
