Medical & Certification
ENG1 medical, STCW & accreditation — what you actually need
Before you can work on a yacht you need the right medical fitness certificate and safety training. Here is clear, factual guidance so you book the correct courses the first time.
ENG1 Medical Certificate
The ENG1 is the seafarer medical certificate required for most yacht crew. It confirms you are medically fit to work at sea.
- •Required by most yachts and recruiters before you join.
- •Issued by MCA-approved doctors; valid for up to 2 years.
- •In South Africa there is currently only one approved ENG1 doctor. Availability can be limited, so early booking is strongly recommended.
STCW Basic Safety Training
STCW is the mandatory baseline safety qualification for all yacht crew, covering fire-fighting, sea survival, first aid and personal safety.
- •Required entry-level certification for new crew.
- •Delivered over roughly 5 days at accredited schools.
- •Refresher training is required every 5 years.
Accreditation & Bodies
We only list real courses from recognised bodies, with the accrediting authority shown per course.
- •RYA, MCA and STCW courses across Deck, Interior and Engineering.
- •Guidance on internationally recognised training pathways and regional certification requirements where applicable.
- •Search 'MCA' or 'STCW' in the catalogue to see all matching courses.
Regional Note: Medical and certification requirements vary depending on flag state, employer, operating area, and vessel type. Accepted requirements may differ by jurisdiction and employer policies. Always confirm requirements directly with your yacht, management company, recruiter, training provider, or employer before booking.
