- 1
Be honest about the lifestyle
Long days, months away from home, shared cabins and seasonal, uncertain work. If that still appeals, carry on.
- 2
Complete STCW Basic Safety Training
Required for anyone working on a commercial yacht. Book it with a provider approved by a recognised maritime authority, such as the MCA. Skip extra courses until you know your department.
- 3
Get your seafarer medical
Most yachts ask for an ENG1. Find an approved doctor and check which equivalents are accepted on our medicals page.
- 4
Check your passport and visas
Make sure your passport has plenty of validity left. Check the visa rules for where you plan to work, such as the Schengen area or the US B1/B2.
- 5
Write a one-page yacht CV
A clear photo, your certificates, relevant shore experience and honest references. Never invent yacht experience.
- 6
Budget before you fly
Courses, medical, flights, a crew house and living costs while you look. Arriving without a buffer is one of the most common reasons people go home early.
- 7
Pick a hub and the right timing
Med hiring peaks in spring (Antibes, Palma). The Caribbean picks up before winter. Florida runs most of the year.
- 8
Look for work properly
Dockwalk, take daywork and register with reputable crew agencies. Legitimate agencies don't charge crew to find them a job.
- 9
Avoid the common mistakes
Paying for courses you don't need yet, unprofessional social media, a CV that runs to several pages, and turning up without money to wait for the right job.
