Charter or Private: Which Yacht Should You Join?

Tips, workload, guest time and time off differ enormously. How to choose the right first boat.

Charter

Guests change every week or two, the pace is intense, and tips can add substantially to income. Standards are high and turnarounds are brutal.

Private

One owner and their guests, fewer trips, longer quiet periods and more maintenance. Usually no tips, often a higher base salary.

Which suits you

If you want to bank money fast and learn service under pressure, charter. If you want steadier rhythm and deep knowledge of one vessel, private.

The hybrid

Many yachts do both. Ask specifically how many charter weeks were completed last season — not how many are "planned".

Questions to ask in the interview

  • How many charter weeks last year?
  • What is the guest-to-crew ratio?
  • What is the rotation or leave policy?
  • How long has the current crew been on board?

Crew retention is the real signal

A boat where crew stay two or three seasons is worth more than a boat with a bigger number on the salary line.
