The Deckhand Career Path: From Green Crew to Captain
How to progress on deck — the tickets, sea time and skills that take you from green deckhand to Bosun, Mate and ultimately Captain.
The Crew Atelier · 6 min read
The deck department offers one of the clearest career ladders in yachting. With the right tickets and consistent sea time, a green deckhand can climb steadily toward command.
Green deckhand
You start with STCW and ENG1. Useful extras include a Powerboat Level 2, VHF radio licence, and watersports instructor tickets such as jet ski, diving or kitesurfing — these make you far more hireable.
Experienced deckhand and Bosun
After a season or two you build skills in line handling, tender driving, exterior maintenance and watersports. A Bosun leads the deck team and manages toys, tenders and maintenance schedules.
Officer of the Watch and Mate
Working toward a Yachtmaster Offshore and then an MCA Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate moves you into navigation and watchkeeping. A Mate supports the Captain in running the vessel.
Master and Captain
With accumulated sea time and higher certificates of competency such as Master 200GT or 3000GT, you can take command. Captain salaries scale with vessel size, reaching well into five figures monthly on large yachts.
Keep stacking tickets and sea time
Every certificate and every season compounds. Plan your progression early and pick courses that match your next step. Our team can help you map the route.
